A transit is the specific movement of a planetary body. It’s often the current movement of the planetary body.
As in, the sun is transitting through Scorpio (a.k.a. the sun’s in Scorpio).
To see where the planets are on a certain date, add transits to your chart:
Go to astro.com (return to Step 1 if you have not pulled your chart before)
Under your chart selection, change CHART TYPE from “Natal Chart Wheel” to “Natal Chart and transits*”
Enter your START DATE. This is the date that you want to observe. If you want to see where the planets are today, enter today’s date. If you want to see where they will be on the next full moon, enter that date. If you want to see where they were on your eighteenth birthday, enter that date. This works for any date. Though things do get a little tricky when you go so far in the past (pre-1583) that the Gregorian calendar had yet to be adopted.
Now, run your chart with all the settings above (the rest of the settings will stay the same as they are in Step 1).
Now, you will see a new feature on your chart: little green glyphs on the outside of the wheel.
The indicate where the planets were on the date you selected.
And these are your transits!
While the glyphs on the inside of your birth chart wheel will always stay the same, the transits (green glyphs) are always changing. The black glyphs are called your natal planets/points. The green glyphs are called transitting planets (of the date you selected).
Transitting planets engage with your birth chart, lighting up pieces of it as the transitting planets move past places in your chart.
In other words, transitting planets form aspects to your natal planets.
Say it’s your birthday. In that case, the transitting sun will be conjunct (at the same place in the sky) as your natal sun.
Not only do transitting planets interact with the planets in your chart, but they also interact with the houses. A transitting planet might not be touching (aka conjunct/in aspect to) any planet in your chart, but it wil always be moving through one of your twelve houses.
